Monte Albán

We have just returned from Monte Albán for a quick recharge before a late lunch and explore of Oaxaca this afternoon.

Monte Albán is an ancient Zapotec city high up in the mountains a few kilometres from Oaxaca. It was first occupied in 500BC, but has had several reincarnations over time. Abandoned by the Zapotecs in about 700-900BC for no apparent reason, it was used by the Mixtecs to bury some of their own dignatories. Now days, it is a vast, hot desertscape.

We walked around the buildings, sat overlooking the Oaxacan valleys below, and were able to buy a few trinkets at the market stalls.
